Garnatxa Negra (Grenache) (100%)
The grapes come from 18 year old vines on the west bank of the
Algars – the only part of Catalonia on that side of the river. The
organically grown grapes were hand harvested in a rush on the
14th of September as the weather closed in.
In order to produce a straightforward wine with bags of crunchy
fruit, the bunches were hand sorted, destemmed, crushed and
fermented in stainless steel at 26C with minimal punchdowns. In
order to avoid excess tannins, the must was pressed off after 10
days and returned to stainless to finish fermenting, then transferred
to an old oak foundre to mature for 8 months. The resulting
wine was bottled unfiltered.
A total of only 1,976 bottles were made.
– Alcohol content: 14%
– Total acidity: 4.6 g/l (as tartaric)
– Volatile acidity: 0.23 g/l
– Residual sugar: 0.5 g/l
The light colour disguises the weight of fruit, with cherries and
redcurrant on the nose being joined by stewed raspberry on the
palate. With subtle fine tannins and plenty of acidity, this wine is
unashamedly in the “modern” fruit-forward, easy-to-drink style.
A versatile red which can handle most cheeses, pasta dishes, pizza
and stroganoff. Chilled, it is great on its own on a sunny terrace.
The wine can be served either at the traditional 16 -18°C but is also
great to serve in the summer at 10 -12°C.
