El Senyal Negre 2020


A luscious fruity red made from Spain’s indigenous Grenache and Carignan grapes including the rare “Hairy Grenache” (Garnatxa Peluda), and with 12 months in a mix of old and new oak barrels.

Voted Best Lightly Oaked Red in Terra Alta Festa Del Vi Wine Competition 2019. Awarded 92pts in Decanter July 2023.



Grenache (65%), Carignan (22%), Hairy Grenache (Garnatxa Peluda) (15%)

The Grenache is from 32 year old vines grown at 420m overlooking
Vall Major in Batea. The Downy Grenache (Garnatxa Peluda) and
Carignan are from the vineyards at Mas de Cabrera in Gandesa.
Both areas are dominated by poor limestone soils. After the hot dry
summer promoted early ripening, both the Grenaches were picked
early on the 17th September. The Carignan followed on the 24th of

Each grape variety was hand picked separately before undergoing
a 5 day cold soak. Individual fermentations followed at up to 24°C
in stainless steel, with regular punchdowns. Malolactic fermentation
and 10 months maturation was carried out in French oak
barrels, with 20% new.

– Total acidity: 5.1 g/l (as tartaric)
– Volatile acidity: 0.52 g/l
– Residual sugar: 1.0 g/l
– Total SO2: 64 mg/l

Tasting Notes
Very floral nose full of lifted red fruits, violets and vanilla fudge. The palate is all red fruits with plums and strawberries to the fore. Mouthfilling but smooth and approachable rather than tannic.

Food Pairing
As well as the traditional ‘steak frites’, BBQ ribs and chops, it also pairs well with beef carpaccio, duck and roast lamb.

Serving Suggestions
The wine is ideally served at 16-18°C. It will benefit from decanting shortly before serving, particularly as it ages. It will continue to evolve over the next 5-10 years.
