Celler Alimara is owned by British winemakers Andy and Ali McLeod. With a history of winemaking in England, they ventured south to make artisanal wines using Catalonia’s best native grapes. Consultant Andrew Halliwell, who has made wine on five continents, oversees the cellar and the team produce some of the most elegant and typical wines of the region.
The majority of the wines are made from the owner’s vineyards at Mas de Cabrera, which is at 400m altitude and is situated between Gandesa and Batea. The vineyards have been operated sustainably, with no use of herbicides or insecticides. The owners embarked on the three year process to covert to full organic production in 2020.
The winery is located in Batea and is capable of producing up to 50,000 bottles. It is equipped with modern machinery and features stainless steel, concrete and wood fermenters. As in the vineyard, minimal intervention is practiced. The reds are always unfiltered, and over time fully natural ferments are being introduced.
